[edit] Name
Yacti were first known as EXPERIMENT236 [2] by the ZTI, but the government decided to give it a proper name after they were discovered. The name Yacti derives from the old Fremenick name for the rat, yakita, as the Yacti were first seen in Rellekka. Their scientific name is Vegrandis Diabolus, which roughly means Tiny Devil in Latin [3]. They are also called Takata by the Immortals.
[edit] Biology
The Yacti are tiny creatures, around the size of a rat. However, they are distinguishable from rats by the fact that their back legs are hard, and scaled, that they have tiny pincers at the front of their bodies, and the large tail. Inside, they have a heart the size of a peanut, two tiny stomachs, and large lungs for their size.
They can also emit a poison, similar to that in a bee or wasp, that stings the victim. This is used to paralyze it’s prey, usually worms.
On their back, the Yacti have certain cells called yomati[4] that glow different colours according to it's mood. An example of love can be seen in the Breeding section below, and anger in Combat
Due to it's prey being underground, the Yacti's fore-head uses sonar to locate food.
[edit] Traveling
Despite the fact that the back legs of the Yacti inhibit it's speed ever-so slightly, it is still quite a fast creature [5]. When digging, it can do something very clever. As well as having strong back legs for pushing, it is able to digest the soil, very similar to worms, exept that they do not rely on it. While underground, it's tail goes straight and sticks out behind it.
[edit] Combat
Yacti can be found all over RuneScape, and have wide wander radiuses. They have killed many new players, for despite the fact that it is only a level 2 creature, it can poison.
A Yacti can randomly pop up anywhere on RuneScape if it is hungry. it will attack the nearest creature, be it monster, animal or player. The picture above shows an angry Yacti attacking a wolf [6] .
[edit] Breeding
In records from the Saradominist monk, Santo (4th age, 231 - 328), they were described as, "tiny rabbits with sharper claws".
Yacti females usually mate in summer, and pregnancy lasts between 2 or 3 weeks. During the summer, they can mate with around 6 different males. As described by Santo, they can have up to 12 children in one litter. This is why infestations occour so often. To atract females, males can emit a green glow from the scales on their back.
Here is a photo of the rare occasion that the creatures come above ground to hunt and mate.
[edit] Growth Stages
From left:Elder, Adult, Adolescence and Newborn
Yacti live for roughly 60 years, due to their ability to escape from potential predators. Their four main life stages are:
[edit] Newborn
A baby Yacti is around 5cm (2 inches) long, and it is born with a layer of scales on it's back for protection. Newly born Yakti have no pincers and no tail, so it may be mistaken for a mouse by a short-sighted person.
[edit] Adolescence
Teenage Yacti are 7cm (3.1 inches) long. They become slightly less aggrecive than in their Newborn stage and lose their protective scales. Their tail and pincers become fully developed, but they cannot produce poison. at the age of 20, they become...
[edit] Adult
Their full 10 cm (4 inches), Adults can mate and can produce a poison to sting their prey. This is usually the last stage in a Yacti's development, but a rare few develop into Elders.
[edit] Elder
Elders grow to 20 cm (8 inches), and are the most dangerous. Their poison can kill the victim, and is highly valued for this reason. There is usually one elder per family, for protection. They can sometimes be tamed, and are valuable guards.
[edit] History
Yacti were originally experiments by the ZTI [7] , by using a method called Sigma. Sigma allows you to combine the characteristics of two completely different animals together [8] When a freak power storm destroyed the HQ, they all escaped.
The first recorded sighting of a wild Yacti was in 132 of the 4th Age, when a young boy fell into a cave. The Yacti had taken over the cave, and the boy only just got out alive. [9] Since then, environmental groups have kept Yacti nests in strict quarantine.
[edit] Uses
If tamed, Yacti can be good for ridding gardens of rabbits and slugs. They are also used by Gnomes relaxing in the Battlefield to race.
As seen in the picture, the Gnomes draw a black target on the ground. They then use a special potion to change the scales on the back of the body different colours equivalent to each punter. As you can see here, the green gnome has won.
On a physical note, it's poison can be used on weapons, and it's scales and mandibes (out-side jaws) can be dissolved in water as a cure for hangovers. [10]
[edit] Other Species
Although it is related closely to both lemmings and scorpions, it's closest relative is the Vegrandis Diabolus Gigantus, or the Giant Yacti, which can be summoned at level 50 summoning.
It's special attack is called Snap, Snap. This species also poisons, with deadly effects [11].
[edit] Problems
Several things can happen if Yacti enter your home.
[edit] Stage 1 : One or Two Yacti
If a Yacti is found in a home, do whatever you can to kill or capture it without being stung. If they are not found, it might develop into a Stage 2.
[edit] Stage 2 : A family
One of the worst things that can happen is that you will have baby Yacti. This makes the adults much more aggresive, and young Yacti have a protective layer of scales which they shed at adolescence, as described above. This makes them devilishly hard to catch. At this stage you should call a proffesional, who will locate the nest. He will then use a sticky serum to trap the Yacti, which he places in a cage. He later releases them into the wild.
[edit] Stage 3 : Infestation
When a family over develops, this may happen. You should evacuate the dwelling immediately, as Yacti nest at the bottom of walls. The heat the nest creates may make some walls fall down. This requires a group of trained proffesionals, and even they may not succeed.
[edit] Trivia
- Santo also wrote a poem about the Yacti, and it went something like this:
Across the world I have wandered
From Mourners to Cacti,
Of the strangest things I've seen,
the strangest are the Yacti [12]
