Huge Hell-Rats are hostile monsters that can be encountered in small, fiery gulches around Karamja Volcano. These creatures emerged along with the Flame Tower, and generally keep their distance from the Warriors and Guards around it. Additionally, in the center of the largest of these gulches there is a small fissure requiring 9 Agility to fit through, leading to a cave containing higher level Hell-Rats. These more powerful Hell-Rats are notable for being the only monsters in the game to drop Dragon kites. Additionally, in this cave one can encounter two Tzhaar-Xil hunting the rats, although the reason for this is unknown as they do not seem to drop meat.

They may occasionally be set as slayer tasks.

Huge Hell-Rats are almost invariably encountered in packs, and unlike most monsters in RuneScape, they cannot be walked through. They will often attempt to surround you, but they do not deal very high amounts of damage (On an unarmoured opponent they'll do roughly 20-90 points, depending on the particular rat's level) and have low defence, so they are more of a nuisance than a threat to players.

Trivia[]

  • The low level rats' examine text, "A popular TzHaar delicacy", is a reference to the examine text of standard rats, which reads "A popular Dwarven delicacy" which in turn is a reference to the Discworld books, which go into detail about the ways Dwarves eat rats.
  • Before the Huge Hell Rats were released, Jagex mentioned that they would soon be releasing a monster that would be a quick, cheap and easy way to obtain Dragon kites. This was interpreted by players as referring to Dragon kiteshields, but was revealed to have been a joke by Jagex, as they drop only "toy dragon kites".
  • Ordinary Hell-Rats can be found in the gulches with the Huge Hell-Rats.
