Runescape 5, commonly abbreviated RS5, is a version of RuneScape exclusively accessible only when one overdoses on THC from a gilded bowl. It loosely takes form as an earlier version of RuneScape aesthetically (pre-graphics updates of 2006), but has been expanded and changed dramatically in various ways; a sort of divergence from normal RuneScape that ends up at the same level of development as the current RuneScape 3.

Many changes have been made; the most important being the business expansion of Jagex into America. Their staff has been expanded considerably which allows for larger updates to be made more quickly and more ambitious projects to be worked on. The style of development is generally seen to be more conservative than normal RuneScape, with many older ideas being used in development and older projects which were previously abandoned, such as the lizardmen and mammoths. The developers have also aimed to make the game less of a grind, and even when grinding is necessary to make the process less attention-requiring. These changes include the increasing of the maximum level to 120 (where the required experience is 12 million), increase of experience rates for several skills, newer ways to train that are meant to be more challenging yet competitive in terms of experience gain, and lessened experience requirements to level.

As pertains to gameplay, much of the game has been altered extensively, such as the optional use of the keyboard for movement. Combat especially has been practically changed into an entirely new system, where moves and technique have been added, as well as a quick bar interface where hotkeys can be used akin to RuneScape 3. The difference lies in that unlike the other game's ability system, different weapon classes have access to different types of attacks and techniques, with the fundamental aspects of their usage being very different and more conservative; for example, scimitars can use stab and slash attacks as they were able to before the EoC update.
